Gold credit cards 'not a substitute for travel insurance'

Gold credit card holders may believe that their card covers them for all eventualities when travelling abroad - but this may not be the case, one insurer has warned.

InsureandGo said that people with gold credit cards need to look at the small print before heading abroad and not simply assume that they have all the protection they need.

"They think they are [covered] and then they find out it only covers themselves and not their family, or it only covers them if they've booked their whole holiday on their credit card," explained Perry Wilson, founder of the firm.

Mr Wilson's comments follow a study by his company which found that travel insurance claims from Britons cost a total of almost £90 million in 2008 - an increase of 38 per cent on the year before.

It was also discovered that 14 per cent of British travellers headed overseas without insurance.
