Car insurance advice for driving abroad

When obtaining car insurance quotes, drivers should consider whether they will be using their vehicle abroad.

Many insurers charge extra for using cars abroad and so car insurance customers might like to consider that cost when they obtain the quote in the first place, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba).

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at Biba, said: "It's a question of [thinking] 'I will bear that in mind when I get the quotes in the first instance, to make sure that the overall annual bill is going to be less'."

He added that people should also think carefully about what add-on cover they need, such as a 'driving other cars' extension or windscreen insurance.

Biba's advice follows research by moneysupermarket.com, which revealed that 49 per cent of drivers do not know how much cover they will be eligible for when they drive abroad.
