Virgin online banking 'on the horizon'

Virgin tycoon Richard Branson has revealed that his firm is planning to branch out into yet another area and try its hand at offering financial services to its customers online.

Branson has announced the move at a time when Brits' faith in the banking system may have faltered due to the recession, reports the Observer.

The company's new arm will be run through the subsidiary Virgin Money, pending the granting of a banking licence from the Financial Services Authority. This will allow it to offer customers mortgages and accept deposits.

Virgin Money, which is headed by former Norwich Union marketing director Jayne-Anne Gadhia, is also considering making a bid for a flailing financial institution, such as Northern Rock, or entering into a partnership with another bank.

Other services Virgin is considering offering adventurous customers in the future is the chance to be shot up into space with its subsidiary Virgin Galactic - a privelage which scientist Professor Stephen Hawking has already laid down a deposit for.
