One in ten homeowners has no contents insurance, Halifax says

Around one in ten homeowners in the UK are risking losing their valuables for good, as they do not have any home contents cover at all, according to Halifax Home Insurance.

A survey undertaken by the bank has discovered that almost half of respondents have no idea of how much their belonging are worth and a further three-quarters have never had their collectible or antique possessions valued by an expert.

David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance said that in the event of theft, people would surely want some kind of compensation for their losses.

He added: "We'd recommend anyone who has a potentially valuable collection to get it valued by an expert every two years and ensure they obtain a dated copy of the valuation certificate."

According to calculations from Sainsbury's Home Insurance, the average household contains £45,000 worth of valuables.
