AA: Check before you hammer this bank holiday

The Automobile Association (AA) is urging homeowners to take care as they perform DIY duties this weekend, as claims typically surge during bank holiday periods due to mishaps around the home.

A recent survey conducted by the group found that 38 per cent plan to get out the toolbox over the next few days, but one in ten will end up performing a botched job which will cost up to £100 to rectify.

In order to avoid drilling through a pipe, which the poll discovered is one of the most common mishaps, the AA has recommends that DIY enthusiasts get advice before they begin, use suitable fixings and buy a pipe detector so they know what lies behind their walls.

Head of AA Insurance Simon Douglas explained: "Budding DIY-ers should check their cover before they get that tool box out. If necessary, accidental damage can be added to your policy."

Last month, a poll undertaken by Sainsbury's Home Insurance found that two-thirds of Brits have tried their hand at DIY in the last year in a bid to save some cash.
