Scottish Widows Insurance reveals claims statistics

Cancer, heart-related conditions and strokes are the three major conditions which bring about claims for medical insurance, Scottish Widows figures have revealed.

The insurance provider's latest statistics also show that only two per cent of health insurance claims were declined due to the customers' failure to disclose existing medical conditions last year - a decrease from five percent compared to 2007.

From November 2007 to October 2008, the organisation paid out £28 million, or £543,000 a week, in critical illness cover, it reveals.

Head of protection at Scottish Widows Richard Jones stated: "Critical Illness cover is extremely important, no matter what the economic climate, as illness can affect us at any time."

Taking out medical insurance before going abroad should be on the top of the priority list for Brits, as this is the reason why most people submit claims, InsureandGo pointed out last week.
