Londoners and Welsh homeowners 'like to add space to their homes'

Homeowners in London and Wales are the most likely to improve their domestic environment and modernise their spaces by expanding their homes, a new survey has found.

According to the Halifax Home Improvements Survey, 20 per cent of respondents in both Wales and London said they have expanded their homes within the last year, with the most popular modification being the adding of an extension (33 per cent).

Conservatries and loft conversions were favoured by 31 per cent and 28 per cent of these respectively.

Overall, one in ten, or 13 per cent, of those polled in the UK said they had extended the size of their homes within the last 12 months.

The major reasons why people enhanced their homes by adding more space were to improve living standards and lifestyle.

Despite them seeking to make their houses more appealing, Brits are overestimating the value of their homes by as much as £35,000, according to research undertaken by Abbey Mortgages.
