Halifax: Average home improvement spend is £5,300

According to the latest Halifax Home Improvement Survey, Brits spent an average of £5,300 on improving their homes last year.

Pasting table and paint brushes are common sights in the UK, as redecorating is Brits' most popular home improvement method, according to the survey, followed by modifications to gardens, which is the choice of 39 per cent of respondents when it comes to sprucing up their properties.

New furniture, carpets and a change of bathroom suite were methods favoured by 26 per cent, 20 per cent and 18 per cent of those questioned respectively.

Commercial director at Lloyds Banking Group Stephen Noakes commented: "In the current housing market, many people have decided to stay put rather than move. Therefore it is no surprise that we've seen an increase in people adding space to their property."

However, those who improve their homes but do not have house and contents insurance could be putting their belongings at risk, as one in ten people polled by Halifax Home Insurance said that they have failed to take out any cover.
