Halifax: Attending a wedding typically costs £600

Although watching your friends or loved-ones say "I do" is a memorable affair, it could leave you serious out of pocket, according to Halifax statistics.

A poll carried out by the bank found that in order to attend a wedding, Brits spend an average of £624.10 as the cost of gifts, hotel rooms, new outfits and travel add up.

It discovered that reception drinks typically cost £43.70, wedding gifts come to £100 and celebrating a stag or hen weekend could total as much as £92.50 - or £258.50 if it is a weekend abroad.

A sullen 63 per cent of respondents said the bride and groom should consider the money their friends and family will have to fork out before they make any decisions on their big day.

Head of Halifax banking Mike Regnier said: "The cost of attending other people's weddings is often underestimated. It is clear that wedding guests are spending in order to be there for their loved ones."

People for whom money may not have presented much of a problem at their recent wedding ceremonies include footballer Fernando Torres and actresses Maggie Gyllenhall and Selma Hayek.
