Gas customers 'will benefit from largest-ever cold weather payout'

Elderly gas customers on the Age Concern Energy Services tariff are set to benefit from a record £4 million in payouts, it has been revealed.

The 2,000 customers on the tariff will receive £22.88 each as winter 2008/09, which was the coldest on record for a decade, brought some particularly chilly bouts of weather, prompting people to turn up their gas heating.

Residents in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Essex, Lancashire and Birmingham, who saw the coldest weather, are set to receive the highest sums of money.

Operating in conjunction with E.ON, Age Concern's tariff offers its customers a range of benefits and competitive prices for older Brits and will this year pay out the largest sum ever.

Mike Abrey-Bugg, Product Development Manager for Age Concern Energy Services, explained: "Our additional Cold Weather Payment is equivalent to an extra three hours use of a gas fire, and is paid to our gas customers aged 60 and over."

E.ON supplies electricity and gas to eight million households and businesses across the UK.
