'Billions of pounds of goods' to be found in Brits' car boots

British motorists collectively store billions of pounds worth of goods in the boots of their vehicles - news which will no doubt be music to the ears of car thieves.

This is according to the latest research from price comparison website Confused.com, which found that seven million drivers in the UK each store items worth more than £200 in their cars, while 2.8 million people have more than £400 of goods in their boots.

Almost one-third of motorists in London use their vehicles as storage space sue to the lack of room in their properties, while 72 per cent of respondents said that they leave valuable items in their cars through forgetfulness.

"Should any items be stolen from cars, it is better to claim on home contents insurance as car insurance only typically covers belongings up to the value of £250," advises Will Thomas, head of motor insurance at the website.

Motorists received more advice last week from the Office of Fair Trading as it revealed that a car-selling scam which promises to find them a definite buyer is costing them £3 million annually.
