British homeowners 'paying £1.69bn more than necessary'

British homeowners are paying £1.69 billion extra for energy annually than they should be as they are not taking advantage of the internet to shop around for cheaper deals.

This is according to research conducted by uSwitch.com, which found that customers on standard energy plans are paying an average of £185 more a year than those who handle their accounts through the internet.

The site's study also discovered that the average annual energy bill in the UK stands at £1,245 - a figure which could be brought down to £1,000 if people searched out better deals online.

"Whether it's down to lack of understanding, poor communication or apathy, there is absolutely no reason for large numbers of consumers to be overpaying for their household energy," said uSwitch.com energy expert Will Marples.

This news comes after British Gas announced last month that it would be cutting the price of its electricity bills by ten per cent.
