Confused.com: Protect your home from rain and floods

As last weekend saw a stormy patch in Britain's recent spell of good weather, Confused.com reported a surge in enquiries about home insurance policies, it has revealed.

Therefore, the financial guidance website has offered some pointers on how to keep homes sturdy in the event of heavy downpours, flash flooding and even minor earthquakes - such as that experienced by the south of Wales last Friday.

Homeowners who notice heavy rain and fear a flood may be imminent should begin to move furniture upstairs, unplug electrical equipment and turn off their mains supply of water, gas and electricity.

Lightening damage is also something that is a greater risk during the summer months, adds Confused.com, so, should the skies light up, homeowners would be wise to unplug appliances to prevent surges as well as avoid using metal objects such as taps and sinks.

However, one of the best defenses is to be insured all year round, as "the weather continues to cause problems" and is largely unpredictable for many Brits, advises head of home insurance at the site Darren Black.

The Welsh earthquake which occured last week measured three on the richter scale, The British Geological Survey confirmed.
