Germany and France 'most expensive places to crash your car'

According to new data compiled by the UK's largest insurance firm Aviva, having a motoring accident in either France or Germany could leave British motorists particularly out-of-pocket.

Aviva's research shows that the average cost of a road accident in Germany is £2,940 for a British driver - significantly higher than the European average of £1,198.

It also found that the average personal injury claim made by French drivers is £9,510 - which could leave a serious gap in a Brit's finances if they should be the cause of an accident.

Insurance motor underwriting manager for Aviva in the UK Nigel Bartram said that around two million Brits take their vehicles to European countries annually and those that so should ensure that "you are properly covered before you go".

He added: "Otherwise you may have to pay for any claims for damage to your car, whether it's your fault or not."

Meanwhile, Brits considering cutting down on their insurance to save cash should not get rid of motor and home cover, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association, as these are "vitally important".
