Poll finds 7m parents not saving for their children

More than seven million parents in the UK are not saving any money for their children's futures, a poll conducted by Bright Grey has discovered.

Should the worst happen and they fall critically ill or become unable to care for their children, 64 per cent of Brits admitted that they do not have financial precautions in place to cater for their offspring's needs.

A further 15 per cent said they had never even considered the possibility of what may happen to their children if their own health failed.

Proposition director at Bright Grey Roger Edwards said that people are "shying away" from life insurance because it "seems a time consuming task or an expense they don't need at the moment".

However, the firm calculated that the average male in his 20s could insure his life to the sum of £87,000 for less than £20 a month.

Last week, an international poll carried out by HSBC found that 20 per cent of adults worldwide have been dipping into their savings in recent months.
