Gap year travellers advised on maximising funds

Those adventurers currently planning their gap year travels have been advised on how they can make the funds last longer while they are away from home for a prolonged period of time.

As people increasingly opt for breaks due to the currently tight employment market in the UK, currency exchange firm FairFx.com has outlined how those on sabbaticals or gap year travels can make their money go further.

Conducting research is essential ahead of any trip and can serve to give travellers a realistic idea of how much they are likely to spend in each place.

Taking a prepaid card is secure, but loose money can be kept about your person in a secure money belt, it adds, along with documents and extra funds.

Also, those who are likely to be tempted into any extra and expensive activities such as extreme sports, should plan for this before taking off, the firm advises.

Chief executive officer of FairFx.com Stephen Heath said: "Anyone heading off now on a gap year could get an extra US$426 (£259) or 307 euros if they use a FairFX.com pre-paid currency card, assuming they have an average spend of £4,000."

Last month, the government handed out leaflets to graduates on the benefits on volunteering abroad or taking a gap year as it aimed to highlight how good this can look on a CV.
