Brits reminded: Last chance for tax relief on overseas property

Those with holiday homes abroad have been reminded by the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) that this is their last chance to claim tax relief on their second properties.

The NAEA points out that HM Revenue & Customs is currently still accepting late changes added to tax returns as far back as 2003 to 2004, provided they are submitted by July 31st.

Vice chairman of NAEA International Keith Baker said that this amount for some people could be quite significant.

"Not all furnished holiday lets in Europe qualify for this special tax treatment, so it is important to check your property meets the necessary criteria before making a claim," he furthered.

Those Brits going abroad to holiday this summer rather than to buy a home may encouraged by the currently strong exchange rate as the pound has hit a seven-month high against the euro, currency strategist for HiFX Marc Cogliatti has pointed out.
