Lloyds TSB Insurance poll finds cowboy repairmen damaging homes

Under-qualified traders are causing significant amounts of damage to homes in the UK, jeopardising people's insurance policies and spoiling their properties, it has been discovered.

According to a new poll undertaken by Lloyds TSB Insurance for the Times newspaper, over 4.6 million inadequate home repair jobs have been carried out within the last year in the UK.

Due to traders performing substandard work on their properties, one in ten Brits has claimed on their home insurance to correct damage to their roofs and conservatories - a rise of 16 per cent compared to 2008.

In some cases, it costs up to £1,250 to rectify the damage done and the main culprits for poor repair work were found to be unregistered plumbers and builders.

The latest Halifax Home Improvement Survey shows that Brits' most popular home improvement method is redecorating, followed by modifications to gardens, new furniture, carpets and a change of bathroom suite.
