This summer's expected hot weather 'could provoke subsidence'

MoneySupermarket.com has highlighted that this summer's weather forecast from the Met Office, which predicts warmer-than-average temperatures - could see more homes in the UK suffering from subsidence.

The financial services website is now urging homeowners to ensure that they have sufficient insurance, which includes cover in the event of this happening.

It added that subsidence cover can be taken out for as little as £78 annually with both Admiral and American Express, using the example scenario of a 40-year-old homeowner with a three-bedroom property constructed in 1980 with a value of £165,000.

Steve Sweeney, head of home insurance at MoneySupermarket.com, commented: "If a homeowner finds themselves in a situation where their current insurer won't re-insure them after an episode of subsidence, I advise approaching a specialist insurer such as Adrian Flux or insurancechoice."

According to The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, subsidence is most likely to occur in areas where mining has taken place, to homes built on clay soils and properties close to trees and bushes.
