Half of drivers over 50 'fail to check oil levels'

A new survey has found that 50 per cent of motorists aged 50 and over are risking engine failure in their vehicles as they do not to check oil levels often enough.

Undertaken by specialist insurer Rias for National Oil Check Week, the poll discovered that half of respondents aged over 50, or 7.5 million people, do not check the oil in their vehicles at least once a month, which is the standard recommendation.

Furthermore, 1.9 million people never check their oil, while 900,000 expect mechanics to do it when they put their car in for servicing.

"Being able to find £3,500 in order to fund the cost of an engine rebuild would certainly pose a huge challenge for anyone at the moment," managing director of Rias Janet Connor stated.

Another organisation to highlight the risks of not checking oil often enough is Carcraft, which has urged motorists to do this regularly to avoid coughing up cash for expensive engine repairs.
