British employees 'swipe toilet roll and teabags from work'

As politicians have come under fire in recent months for scandals involving expenses, a new poll has found that the average Brit is not completely innocent when it comes to clawing back a few extra pennies from their employers.

According to the survey, conducted by uSwitch.com, almost one million adults in the UK admitted to making off with toilet rolls from work and another 1.3 million have swiped dustbin bags to take home with them.

Food and tea bags have also been lifted by two million workers, while a whopping nine million like to help themselves to items in the stationery cupboard, the research found.

"Employees must think long and hard before exaggerating or submitting a bogus expense claim as it is unlikely that what some might regard as a 'harmless' indiscretion is worth losing a job over," said personal finance expert at uSwitch.com Louise Bond.

The cost of running a household in the UK has risen by 2.6 per cent within the last two years, according to figures compiled by Sainsbury's.
