Brits' annual energy bills 'will hit £4,000 in next decade'

The average British household's energy bill will come in at more than £4,000 within the next ten years, it has been claimed.

Calculated by uSwitch.com, the prediction has been made according to the trend in energy prices witnessed in recent times. The firm has estimated that the current average bill of £1,243 annually will rise to £4,185.

This is based upon the calculations that in 2004, the average energy bill stood at £548 a year and has now risen to £1,243 - an increase of 114 per cent.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said that this new research is a "wake-up call".

She added: "My advice to consumers is to invest in making your home more energy-efficient, reduce the amount of energy you use and make sure you are paying the lowest possible price for it."

Consumer Focus last week urged those with prepaid energy meters to switch to online payment where possible as this is likely to save them money in the long term.
