Wedding guests 'set to spend less on presents in 2009'

It seems blushing brides and proud husbands will witness their wedding guests pinching pennies this year in order to be able to afford their big days.

According to a survey conducted by insurance firm LV=, one in eight engaged couples set to say "I do" this year are requesting that guests donate money to charity instead of buying them gifts.

The poll found that the savings made by the friends and families of engaged couples this year will amount to £178 million. It also discovered that on average, men spend £62 on wedding gifts while women cough up £40.

"Weddings are clearly an expensive affair - but not just for the bride and groom. Despite the recession this research shows that the average couple will spend over £300 per wedding they attend," said John O'Roarke, the managing director of LV= Home and Travel Insurance.

Last week, a survey conducted by Diamond found that British womens' ideal transport for their dream weddings would include Brad Pitt at the wheel of a white Rolls Royce.
