Internet retailers 'will lead the UK out of recession'

Online retailers are set to post growth in the UK before 2012, meaning they will be the first to fight their way out of the tunnel of recession, according to PayPal's calculations.

The internet payment service has predicted in its latest PayPal UK Online Retail Report that by the end of 2011, high street sales will account for £8.3 billion of retail sales in Britain, as opposed to the internet, which will constitute up to £12.3 billion.

Managing director of PayPal UK Carl Scheible said that we can no longer afford to view the expansion of online retail as "a sideshow".

He continued that not only will it be worth as much as £21.3 billion by 2011, but "a £12.3 billion increase will also ensure that the entire UK retail sector is growing again by the end of 2011".

Consumer Focus recently urged energy customers on pay-as-you-go meters to consider changing to online payment methods, saying that this could save them up to £110 annually.
