Thrifty travellers sacrifice restaurants to afford trips

In order to afford their summer holidays as the recession continues, Brits are sacrificing luxuries such as eating out and spending on entertainment while abroad.

These are the results of a new poll carried out by Tesco Travel Money, which found that 54 per cent of Britons plan to cut back on food and drinks spending while away.

Eating in rather than going to a local restaurant will be a priority for 33 per cent, while 39 per cent plan to put away their gladrags and spend less on going out at night.

"The trends at home look likely to be mirrored in our holidays abroad with people quite happy to swap their nights out for a holiday-home cooked meal," said a spokesperson for Tesco Travel Money.

MoneySupermarket.com pointed out earlier this week that holidaymakers could save funds by taking prepaid cards abroad with them, rather than using credit or debit cards and cash.
