Cost of running household 'as low as it was in 2006'

The cost of running a home has dropped in recent times and is now at its lowest level since 2006, according to new research.

Undertaken by Halifax, a new survey has found that household costs currently claim 23 per cent of the average Brits' income, compared to 28 per cent last year.

According to the banking group, this drop is attributable to a 47 per cent decrease in average mortgage interest payments as they fell from 5.8 per cent in April 2008 to 3.6 per cent in April 2009.

Halifax economist Suren Thiru said: "Such a sizeable drop in the costs of running a home will help to ease the pressure on household disposable income, providing some welcome relief to homeowners."

In contrast to this, Sainsbury's research found that the cost of running the average British household has actually risen by 2.6 per cent within the last two years.
