Half of car buyers 'will raid their savings to get their vehicles'

Almost half of those Brits who plan to buy a car over the next six months will take a hammer to their piggy banks in order to do so, it has been discovered.

According to a new poll carried out by the AA, 47 per cent of people looking to buy a new car will do so with their savings.

This is something which may have been spurred by the government's car scrappage scheme, according to Mark Huggins, the director of AA Savings. It provides those with a car over ten years old with £2,000 towards the cost of a new one.

Mr Huggins explained: "Criticism from some quarters that buyers suffer fast depreciation of a new car isn't relevant because most people using the scheme are likely to keep their car for several years."

When it comes to maintaining their vehicles, men are more confident in their abilities than women, a poll undertaken by Churchill Car Insurance found last week.
