This is the advice of Legal & General, which has pointed out that Brits may have valuables in their gardens that are worth more than they assume.
Therefore, the group has come up with some tips on how people can make sure their garden is not an inviting prospect for a thief.
Putting any valuable items out of sight before going indoors is a must, it states, along with ensuring downstairs doors and windows are locked if the person at home is likely to remain upstairs.
Keeping any garden trees, plants and bushes trimmed so that burglars have no place to hide is also recommended by the firm, as is checking that fences have no loose gaps or panels.
Finally, security lighting could prove to be a useful deterrent, along with installing locks on sheds and gates.
According to More Than, a natural deterrent for thieves could be the planting of prickly bushes and shrubs in gardens.
