This is a warning from More Than, as new research carried out by the group found that 41 per cent of British motorists have never heard of this particular criminal act.
It also discovered that two-thirds of those involved in such a crash had no idea that it was staged and a further 32 per cent would not know what to do in such a situation anyway.
However, the poll also found that over the last two years, concerted efforts on the part of police and insurance companies have seen incidents decrease by 11 per cent.
"If more drivers were made aware of the dangers they are facing, it becomes more likely that they will be able to report anything unusual to their insurance company," explained Pete Markey, a spokesperson for More Than.
Meanwhile, for those heading to the continent for a driving holiday this year, Sheila's Wheels has advised them to check their insurance policies thoroughly to make sure they are covered while abroad.
