Average motorist 'owns 9 cars during lifetime'

The average British motorist owns nine cars during their lifetime, a new poll has discovered.

Of the nine cars owned, the first two are purchased before the age of 24, discovered the TescoCompare.com survey, while by the age of 40, the average British motorist will have owned six.

A more frugal 5.5 million people keep the same car through the course of their driving days.

However, Brits are less discerning about which type of car insurance they opt for, TescoCompare.com also found, as 15 per cent could be missing out on better deal due to a reluctance to shop around.

"Even when the make and model of the car doesn't change from year to year, driving experience, age and personal circumstances do, all of which could have an impact on the cost of car insurance," explained Debra Williams, a spokeswoman for TescoCompare.com.

In other motoring news, Sainsbury's Finance is currently offering twelve months of car insurance for the price of ten, plus a further discount of ten per cent for those who purchase the policy online.
