How to avoid being stung by excessive call charges this summer

Although saving for a big summer holiday can be expensive enough, many people continue to be hit with avoidable charges when they use their mobile phones abroad, it has been highlighted.

According to MoneySupermarket.com's manager of mobiles and broadband James Parker, holidaymakers are set to save this summer due to an EU ruling demanding caps on call charges.

However, it is still possible that those who use their phones abroad will be subjected to unnecessary charges and there are ways to avoid this, he added.

Mr Parker advised: "There have been cases where people have racked up thousands of pounds on their phone bill, just by using mobile internet abroad and assuming it's included in their call package."

In order to keep an eye on this, consumers should make sure they have transferred to their roaming setting before making a call, check their network's internet prices before leaving, consider getting a local SIM card and turn off their handsets when not in use, he added.

The EU caps came into power last week and it is expected that network providers will pass on savings of up to 60 per cent to their customers.
