Direct Line: 800,000 homes ransacked during holidays

Brits make more insurance claims on their home contents policies during the months of July and August than any other time of year, according to Direct Line.

According to the insurance group, 800,000 households are subject to thieves who strike while their owners are enjoying a summer break.

A recent survey carried out by Direct Line shows that 35 per cent of Brits do not ask their neighbours to watch over their house while they are away and a further 45 per cent so not leave contact details with them in the event that they should be contacted.

Head of home insurance at Direct Line Andrew Lowe stated: "Burglars can pick up on various clues to establish whether a house is likely to be unoccupied, ranging from an unruly front lawn to newspaper deliveries or post clogging the letter box area."

British homeowners could be paying up to £500 million more than necessary on their home insurance policies, according to Your Money, as many people fail to shop around for more suitable ones before renewing them.
