RIAS: What people are doing to save money on motoring

Like many other areas of everyday life, Brits are attempting to save money on their motoring costs in a variety of different ways, according to new research.

The study, undertaken on behalf of RIAS insurance, discovered that nine out of ten motorists in the UK are taking steps to reduce the costs involved with driving.

Overall, 48 per cent said they are shopping around for cheaper motor insurance, 47 per cent said that they are making fewer journeys or using public transport and 30 per cent are even turning off the air conditioning while using their cars.

A further 35 per cent are reducing their speed and 45 per cent are making sure their tyre pressures are right.

"UK motorists are being enterprising in terms of undertaking specific strategies to reduce their motoring spend," commented Janet Connor, managing director at RIAS.

RIAS was established in 1992 and, like Saga, specialises in insurance policies for Brits aged 50 years or older.
