'Demand outstrips supply' with car scrappage scheme

New research has shown that although the car scrappage scheme has proved to be a hit in the UK, the number of car sales available under it is not enough to satisfy demand.

According to specialist insurance firm RIAS, there are one million motorists eligible to use the scheme in the UK, but only around 300,000 sales will qualify under it.

The study also found that 948,000 motorists with a car over ten years old plan to opt into car scrappage within the next six months - with 40 per cent of these road users being over the age of 50.

"In the current climate the £2,000 scrappage incentive is an attractive option for people in the market to buy a new vehicle and who are concerned about their motoring costs," explained Janet Connor, managing director of RIAS.

Last week, Sainsbury's Car Insurance research showed that two out of three Britons do things while driving that could be potentially dangerous to their fellow motorists.
