Majority of children 'would give up gift for charity'

Despite the popular conception that children are more than enthusiastic when it comes to possessions and receiving presents, a new survey has found that two-thirds of British youngsters would give up a new gift for charity.

Conducted by the Charities' Aid Foundation (CAF), the poll discovered that 68 per cent of children would give up a Christmas or birthday gift and donate the money to charity, while 86 per cent believe we should all take part in donating.

Of the 650 respondents aged between 10 and 16, 95 per cent said that charities make the world a better place. A further 27 per cent have given money to charity within the last year.

"Today's children are the future and their passionate desire to make the world a better place bodes well for our society," said chief executive of the CAF John Low.

Parents underestimate how sensitive their children are to the recession, according to a poll undertaken by supermarket Asda. It discovered that 55 per cent of youngsters worry about money, although just 18 per cent of adult believe that they do.
