OFT: Ticket buyers to receive fairer terms

Brits who like to attend concerts and festivals may be pleased to hear that the Office for Fair Trading (OFT) has negotiated fairer regulations on their behalf when it comes to buying tickets for events.

The changes were made following discussions between the OFT and The Society of Ticket Agents and Retailers (Star), which is an organisation representing businesses selling or re-selling tickets through a wide variety of channels.

Under the new terms, Star members will offer greater clarity where events have been cancelled, how to claim back money if things go wrong and outline when tickets can be legitimately sold on by the consumer.

"There is a need for consumers to have recourse to fair and clear terms and conditions in the rare occurrence that an event is cancelled or should any unfortunate or unforeseen problems arise," said Mike Haley, director of consumer protection at the OFT.

More than 30 million tickets for live events are sold through Star members annually. These include LastMinute.com, Ticketmaster, LoveTheatre.com, Encore Tickets, Live Nation and TicketSOUP.com.
