Parents 'could end up paying £800' to keep kids happy

Parents could be hit with a bill of almost £800 to keep their children happy during journeys this summer, it has been claimed.

According to research from the Post Office, a family with two children could spend up to £781 on in-car accessories to ensure their offspring are busy.

These include two seven-inch headrest screens and a DVD player, which retail at £144.97, two Nintendo DSi consoles and games, costing a total of £210.22 and two iPod videos, which retail at £169.99 each.

"The cost to keep kids entertained on long car journeys can mean expensive items are at risk from being left unattended in the car," explained head of insurance at the Post Office Richard Pennant-Jones.

He advised parents to make sure their windows, doors and boots are locked while the car is parked and any expensive items are concealed.

Research from the AA recently revealed that families could save up to £247 per head by holidaying in the UK this summer, instead of heading abroad.
