It is 'difficult' for travellers to get best rail fares

It is not always easy for British commuters to get the best possible deal when it comes to buying train tickets, London TravelWatch has said.

Jo deBank, a spokeswoman from the organisation, said that rail fares can be complicated and the best deals are to be had by booking well in advance, which is often not the nature of travelling by train.

"With long-distance fares, it is more of a problem in that you have to book ahead to get it. People don't use them like airplanes and book two months ahead," she explained.

Ms deBank was responding to the findings of a new report from the House of Commons Transport Committee, which states that, when it comes to rail franchising, the needs of passengers have not always been top of the agenda for businesses.

It called upon the government to ensure that franchises honour their duties towards rail users, as well as the commitments made within their franchising contracts.
