ABI: Car insurance premiums being pushed up by personal injury claims

The rising cost of legal fees brought about by personal injury claims is impacting negatively upon car insurance policies in the UK, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said.

According to a spokesperson for the group Malcolm Tarling, it is evident that the costs generated by these cases are being felt by insurance firms.

He pointed out that in 2008, claims related to personal injuries totalled £9.6 billion, compared to £9.2 billion in 2007 and £8.8 billion in 2006.

"We believe that the vast majority of non-contentious personal injury claims can be settled just as quickly without the need for lawyers to be involved, without any reduction in compensation for the customer," Mr Tarling stated.

According to the AA's British Insurance Premium Index, which was released this week, the average car insurance policy quote increased by 3.5 per cent between April and June.
