Saga Boat Insurance offers vessel protection tips

Saga Boat Insurance has offered those who own their own vessels some tips on how they can avoid mishaps and claiming on their policies.

The group has revealed that theft is the second most frequent claim it encounters and the average sum paid out after such incidents is £1,218.

Therefore, it advises boat owners keep any expensive belongings out of sight and locked away, such as navigational equipment and wet suits.

Also, if the boat has curtains, it is best to keep these closed when moored, as well as ensuring that life rafts, tenders and motors are secured with good quality locks.

Finally, Saga also points out that some items more than others have been targeted by thieves of late and these include copper and bronze, so covering up any bells, plaques and statues may be a good idea.

Last month, Saga recommended that those buying second-hand boat accessories remain vigilant, as any items found to be stolen can be confiscated by the police.
