Fewer drivers taking out car insurance, finds MoneySupermarket.com

Car insurance policies are being shunned by increasing numbers of motorists as more people get behind the wheel without protection.

These are the findings of a MoneySupermarket.com commissioned survey, which discovered that 33 per cent more motorists than last year do not have insurance.

Overall, the poll found that 20 per cent of drivers in the UK are driving without insurance policies, a figure that stood at 15 per cent in 2008.

Male drivers are more likely then their female counterparts to drive without protection, it also discovered, with 23 per cent saying they have done it in the past, compared to 16 per cent of women.

"Whatever the distance driving without insurance is illegal. Anyone caught doing so could face hefty penalties which include a £200 on-the-spot fine and six points on their licence," said head of motor insurance at MoneySupermarket.com Steve Sweeney.
