Sainsbury's Car Insurance: Do not use second-hand child seats

Sainsbury's Car Insurance has warned parents against buying second-hand car seats for their children, as they could have suffered damage during a previous car accident.

The supermarket bank has conducted research which shows that around 713,000 child car seats in the UK were bought from a previous owner, but 250,000 of these may have been involved in an accident or minor bump.

It also pointed out that family and friends passing on old car seats is a common occurrence, while at the time of the study, there were 131 available through online auction hub eBay.

"Unless they are brand new as opposed to hand-me-downs, you cannot be 100 per cent sure of their safety," said Sainsbury's Car Insurance manager Lucy Hunter.

The Sainsbury's financial arm is a joint venture set up between the supermarket and the Lloyds Banking Group.
