BRC: The weather impacts upon Brits' spending

Seasons govern the buying habits of Brits, meaning that the currently disappointing summer weather could see consumers making out-of-character purchases.

This is according to Richard Dodd, a spokesperson for the British Retail Consortium (BRC), who stated that unseasonal weather can cause havoc for retailers.

"There is a danger that they will be left with unsold seasonal items once autumn arrives. And that is partly what sales are about - clearing those seasonal lines," he explained.

Weather, along with the state of the economy and how much money consumers have, is a major factor in the spending habits of Brits, he added.

Those who love a spot of shopping may be hit harder in the wallet as the new year approaches, as Alistair Darling is sticking to his resolution to restore VAT to its original levels.
