Halifax House Price Index unveiled

The Halifax House Price Index for July has been released and shows a rise in the value of property in the UK.

According to the monthly survey, house prices across the country rose by an average of 1.1 per cent - representing the third increase within the last two months.

It also shows that house prices during the three months to June were 0.8 per cent higher than during the previous quarter and demand for homes has increased since the start of the year.

Halifax stated: "Higher demand has combined with the low levels of property available for sale to boost sales activity from exceptionally low levels and support prices over the past few months."

Compared to July 2008, house values are now 12.1 per cent lower then they were last year, according to the index.

This news echoes that delivered by the Nationwide Housing Index last week - which revealed that the average cost of a house in the UK rose to £158,871 last month.
