Halifax: Don't tempt burglars with poor security efforts

Halifax is urging homeowners to be more vigilant and careful when it comes to locking up their homes this summer, as new research shows that cases of theft are rising amid the recession.

According to a poll undertaken by the bank, the number of burglaries taking place in the UK has risen by four per cent since the last financial quarter.

It also discovered that one in seven people feel that burglary is more prevalent since the onset of the economic downturn.

Bearing in mind that the peak season for burglaries in Britain is summertime, Halifax is urging homeowners to take al possible measures to secure their properties.

"When it's warm outside people often leave windows and doors open to keep cool, but many don't realise that burglaries often happen while the homeowners are at home," stated senior claims manager at the bank Martyn Foulds.

Earlier this year, Norwich Union research revealed that games consoles and DVDs constitute approximately two-thirds of the items stolen from homes by burglars in the UK.
