A poll carried out by the home insurance provider found that 22 per cent of Brits keep their windows and doors unlocked while they are at home - something that may be temptation to thieves, it points out.
Therefore, keeping the front door locked while enjoying the summer weather in the garden, closing windows when you are not in the room and putting valuables out of site are all good places to start, Halifax advises.
There are additional measures that can be taken against thieves, it adds, including marking property with an ultra violet pen and keeping the receipts of valuables such as jewellery after buying.
If homeowners are in possession of a lot of expensive items, the bank adds, it may be worth installing key-operated window and door locks and maybe even a small safe.
Another insurer to offer advice to homeowners is the AA, which said that keeping car keys safe around the house is imperative, as burglars are likely to also take their vehicles if they find them.
