Debra Williams, a representative from the price comparison site, advised learning how to live within one's means to make the best of what is such an "exciting time".
As well as this, she recommended being aware of the lowest rates for financial products and looking out for any student deals when arriving at university.
"When you get there, check out the local area for places that offer a student discount and buddy up with flatmates to pool resources," she said.
She pointed out that living away from home and having to manage your own finances can be hard but it can be a great idea to take a few lessons in "weekly budgeting".
Students may also be interested in previous research by Tesco Compare which claims that it can cost up to £1 a day to leave an appliance on standby and not use it.
