Tescocompare.com offers advice to keep your home safe

Tescocompare.com has identified keeping the right level of home insurance cover in place as one of its top tips to keep your home safe when you are away.

It also advised people to try and make it look like as though somebody was inside the house, by using time-operated lights and asking a neighbour to park in your drive a few times while you are not at home.

Debra Williams of Tescocompare.com noted that it was important to understand how much you are covered by your insurance policy, as well as trying to avoid being burgled.

She said: "Whether going away on a day trip, for a long weekend, or for longer periods of time, avoiding any tell tale signs of your absence is essential."

The website also suggested making sure that all doors and windows were locked, as well as keeping valuables locked away and out of site.

Last month, the site revealed that if people go on holiday for two weeks, an electrical appliance left on standby can use up to £14 of energy.
