uSwitch.com says direct debit banking is cheapest

uSwitch.com has recommended that people pay their energy bills by direct debit as it will offer them the cheapest prices.

The comparison website has seen a drop in the number of people paying by direct debit and is worried about the amount of money that is being lost.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, understands that some people are worried about making sure the funds are available when the payment comes out, but says paying by any other method will cost more.

She said: "Paying by direct debit opens the path to the cheapest energy prices in the market - this is not something to give up without a fight."

The website reported a 7.3 per cent drop in the number of customers choosing to pay by direct debit compared to this time last year.

This form of transaction is protected by the direct debit guarantee, so if a mistake is made during payment you have the right to a refund from your bank.
