EHIC could save you money on travel insurance

Having a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) could save people money on their travel insurance, according to moneysupermarket.com.

The EHIC was brought in to replace the E111 in 2006 and allows holidaymakers to get basic treatment in European countries at the same cost as a local resident.

Maxine Baker, travel insurance manager at the price comparison site, pointed out that people would need travel insurance if they required complex procedures, but the EHIC covers many low-level medical bills.

"Medical treatment in mainland Europe doesn't come cheap and holidaymakers stand to lose out and suffer unexpected financial pain," she said.

She made her comments following research by moneysupermarket.com which showed that 51 per cent of British people were not aware of the benefits of the EHIC.

The survey also indicated that 43 per cent of the population still believed they could take their E111 with them abroad to receive medical treatment, which is untrue.

Last month, the website released results of a survey demonstrating that only four per cent of the population would consider cancelling essential insurance cover, such as motor or home, in order to cut outgoings.
